4-Hers Inducted with Style

Where problems arise, 4-Hers find solutions.

For its 3rd biennial installation, the 4-H Fraternity of Trinidad and Tobago welcomed over three thousand 4-Hers to their fold through the induction ceremonies conducted during the first two weeks of November 2023. 4-Hers in Tobago were inducted in June 2023.  The decision to decentralize the induction ceremonies came because of non-access to the originally planned site of Skinner Park. Solution; the seven 4-H county executives rushed into planning at various sites around Trinidad.  At these ceremonies, many 4-Hers, dressed in their green and white 4-H uniforms, pledged their head, hearts, hands, and health to clearer thinking, greater loyalty, larger service, and healthy living to their club, community, country, and world. They pledged to “to make the best better”.

The first induction was held on November 1st, 2023.  4-H County Caroni, County Victoria, and County St. Andrew/St. David inducted over 800 4-Hers.  The ceremony came off in grand style at the Couva/Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce with Mr. Stephon Felmine bringing great humour in his unique style as Master of Ceremonies. In attendance were the Honorable Minister of Youth Development and National Service, Mr. Foster Cummings, the CEO of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Peter Smith, the CEO and Founder of WhyFarm, Mr, Alpha Sennon as well as Mr, Ataul Ali-Kajim, a representative from the Agricultural Development Bank, Mrs. Geselle Edwards-Hodge from IICA, Mr. Ramdeo Boondoo, Chaconia Gold Medal, Root Crop Farmer and President of the 4-H Leaders Council of Trinidad and Tobago, Mrs. Natasha Lee.  The 4-Hers were elated to receive their certificates and pins which they immediately proudly adorned.

Also, on November 1st, County Nariva/Mayaro held its Induction Ceremony at the BP Conference Centre, Mayaro.  President of the County and Vice President of the 4-H Leaders Council of Trinidad and Tobago, Marvin Clarke oversaw the proceedings along with his county executive team. It was indeed a proud moment for all 4-Hers from both primary and secondary schools, as they expressed how enriching it was to be part of a functioning team.

County St. Patrick West held its induction ceremony on November 3rd, 2023, at the Chatham Government Primary School. In attendance were the School Supervisor 1 from the Ministry of Education, Mr. Ian Ramlal, the Agricultural Officer 1 from the Ministry of Agriculture, Land, and Fisheries, Mr. Alan Mahabir, the President and the P.R.O. from the 4-H Leaders Council of Trinidad and Tobago, Mrs. Natasha Lee, and Ms. Elizabeth Theodore, respectively and Mrs. Ria Pooran-Gopaul, the President of 4-H County, St. Patrick West.  The over one hundred 4-Hers present rejoiced in song and loud applause at this major accomplishment.

The last induction ceremony came off with much pump and circumstance on November 14th, 2023.  Over 300 new 4-Hers from County St. George East and St. George West joined the Trinidad and Tobago 4-H family at the Cheryl Greaves Hall, Bishop Anstey High School East & Trinity College East, Trincity.  Mr. Alpha Sennon, CEO and Founder of WhyFarm delivered the featured address highlighting that “every activity in 4-H prepares you for the path you will take in life, any career you may choose”.  He encouraged all in attendance to “dream big and to never think that what you do is not worth it.”  Mr. Derron Sandy also graced the gathering with his rendition of “Jus Dive”.  Ms. Nina Khan, who played an instrumental role in building 4-H in Trinidad and Tobago over the years as County Coordinator for St. George West, also graced us with her presence. It was the broad smiles on 4-Hers faces as they graced the stage to collect their pins and certificates that filled the atmosphere with pure joy.  Many expressed enthusiasm about joining what they described as “the best club in the world”.

4-Hers in Trinidad and Tobago engage mainly in project-based learning activities where they acquire and use skills and strategies to complete tasks.  4-Hers are currently focusing on the topic of “Food Preservation/Food Safety” as they prepare for this next major competition currently ongoing, due to end in March 2024.
