Cultivating Future Leaders: Mason Hall Government School’s 4-H Club Hosts Inter-House Agricultural & Value-Added Product Competition

“Grow It. Make It. Showcase It!” wasn’t just a theme—it came to life at Mason Hall Government School, where the 4-H Club, The Cultivators, hosted its first-ever Inter-House Agricultural and Value-Added Product Competition. Over eight exciting weeks, students from Fire Opal, Sapphire, Diamond, and Ruby Houses embarked on a hands-on journey of agriculture, creativity, teamwork, and entrepreneurship.
A Community-Driven Effort
The event was spearheaded by 4-H Voluntary Leader Daniele Jacobs Charles, with support from fellow volunteer Ms. Warner. Their efforts were bolstered by parents, school staff, and community members who offered sponsorship and encouragement, truly demonstrating the power of partnership in education.
Planting the Seeds
Kicking off in May, students rolled up their sleeves to prepare garden beds—many planting crops for the very first time. Each House chose crops suited to the season:
-
Ruby: Pepper, Chocolate Mint, Patchoi
-
Fire Opal: Lettuce, Beetroot, Pepper, Chocolate Mint
-
Diamond: Rosemary, Cucumber
-
Sapphire: Celery, Beetroot
Under the guidance of passionate teacher mentors, students took part in every stage—from land preparation and planting to maintenance and harvesting. Weekend watering rosters and cross-house teamwork kept spirits high and gardens thriving.
Judging Day: Growth Meets Innovation
On June 26, 2025, judges Mrs. Antoniette Alfred (Past President, 4-H Tobago Council), Mrs. Hazel Trim-Tate (Agricultural Extension Officer), and Ms. Gamali Waldron (Tobago 4-H Coordinator) assessed the gardens. Judging criteria included crop health, creativity, teamwork, marketability, presentation, and documentation.

In Phase 2 of the competition, students transformed their harvests into value-added products, bringing innovation to the table with food items and creations that highlighted the entrepreneurial side of agriculture.

A vibrant showcase day capped off the competition, with students proudly presenting their crops and products. Fire Opal claimed the top spot, taking home:

This initiative planted more than crops—it nurtured leadership, House spirit, teamwork, and business acumen. It also created stronger bonds among teachers and ignited students’ interest in agriculture as a pathway to innovation and success.
Mason Hall Government School’s 4-H Club has proven that when students are empowered to grow it, make it, and showcase it, they flourish—not only in the garden, but in life.
