On Friday, 20th September 2024, the Tacarigua Community Centre in Bally Trace, Tacarigua, was abuzz as the 4-H Leaders Council of Trinidad and Tobago hosted its first General Meeting for the new cycle. The meeting, held in the county of St. George East, gathered Voluntary Leaders (VLs) from across the organization’s nine counties, inclusive of Tobago, to participate in a highly anticipated training session, featuring expertise in the fields of public speaking and storytelling.

The training session included distinguished facilitators: Mr. Lance Mottley, Ms. Penelope Spencer, and Desmond Lawrence. Each brought a wealth of experience in their respective areas,  offering invaluable guidance on the intricate art and skill of public speaking and storytelling. Their collective goal was to equip the attending 4-H Voluntary Leaders with the tools and techniques to effectively coach their 4-Hers for the upcoming Public Speaking/Storytelling competition.

Scheduled for January 2025, the competition is set to be hosted by the 4-H Leaders Council of Trinidad and Tobago. With the event fast approaching, the meeting served as an ideal platform to help VLs gain confidence in preparing their youth members. The trainers broke down the nuances of public speaking, focusing on voice modulation, body language, and persuasive communication. They also delved into the creative elements of storytelling, highlighting how to engage an audience, use emotion, and structure stories for maximum impact.

By the end of the session, VLs were more informed and highly motivated to begin working with their 4-Hers in preparation for the competition. The leaders expressed their eagerness to put their newfound knowledge into practice, knowing that this training would greatly enhance their youth’s performance on stage.

The National Executive of the 4-H will provide further details on the competition, including specific topics and rubrics, in the coming month. As the 4-H community looks ahead to the exciting event, leaders and participants alike are encouraged to stay tuned for more updates and to continue honing their public speaking and storytelling skills.

Stay tuned for more information on how 4-Hers across the nation will rise to the challenge!
