Revitalizing 4-H Club Life in Tobago
Three officers from the 4-H Leaders Council of Trinidad and Tobago—Mrs. Natasha Lee (President), Ms. Elizabeth Theodore (PRO), and Ms. Satrupa Sesnarayan (Treasurer)—embarked on a crucial visit to Tobago to assess potential 4-H clubs at schools across different educational levels. The visit, coordinated by Gamali Waldron, County Coordinator for Tobago, aimed to identify schools that would receive FAO-UN-funded hydroponic systems by March 31st, 2025.
Revitalizing 4-H in Tobago
The 4-H movement in Tobago saw a decline in club activity after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with renewed interest from schools, this initiative provides an exciting opportunity to reignite 4-H-led projects and activities. The FAO-UN’s support makes the program even more attractive, as it brings innovative hydroponic farming systems to participating schools.
On Thursday, February 6th, 2025, the team visited Scarborough Secondary, Little Jewels ECCE, Goodwood Secondary, and Roxborough Secondary. At Roxborough Secondary the team was warmly welcomed by Mr. Patterson Brooks, Tobago 4-H County President, who expressed his enthusiasm for the resurgence of 4-H activities on the island.
Continuing their mission, on Friday, February 7th, 2025, Ms. Lee and Ms. Theodore visited Scarborough Methodist Primary and Parlatuvier Anglican Primary. The goal was to rejuvenate club life and encourage the schools to embrace the 4-H vision of life skills and to empower youth through agriculture, leadership, and sustainable development.
Looking Ahead
The 4-H Leaders Council of Trinidad and Tobago eagerly anticipates the General Meeting on May 29th, 2025, where there is hope to receive confirmation from the Tobago 4-H County Executive that 4-H is thriving once again in Tobago. At that time, 4-HTT would seek to welcome into its fold the many new 4-Hers at Tobago’s 4-H Induction Day.
The 4-H team extends gratitude to FAO-UN for their invaluable support in spreading the 4-H message in Tobago. With renewed energy and commitment, 4-H aims to inspire more schools to join the movement and embrace its motto: ‘To Make the Best Better’.
