WHAT 4-H MEMBERS DO
“Learning by doing” is the best way to retain knowledge. Research has shown that learners have the ability to retain:
- 20% of what they hear
- 30% of what they see
- 50% of what they see and hear
- 70% of what they say and
- 90% of what they say and do
4-H members learn by doing ‘projects’. Each 4-H member must be involved in some kind of activity while belonging to a club.
This may either be an individual activity, a group activity, or a club activity.
These activities are called ‘projects.’ Projects may include:-
- agriculture horticulture craft
- food and nutrition
- field trips seminars/workshops
camps - exchange visits (domestic and abroad)
- community projects
- exhibitions fairs
- marathons hikes
Completion of an individual project allows the 4-H member to develop skills and talents and increase his self confidence. It also allows him to get better experience in decision-making when he decides on his projects and the quality of work to be performed. He learns to accept responsibility for completing his project work and the value and techniques of keeping accurate records. Projects are sometimes judged and prizes awarded.
